Here is the first in our blog series about the zero carbon build, deep retro fit project we are carrying out in Liverpool.

On this project we are renovating a double fronted Victorian house, into a zero carbon, deep retrofit, passive house. This is a very ambitious eco build project and possibly a first for the Merseyside area, we feel. Hopefully this can pave the way for making more homes energy efficient.

This project involves improving the building's insulation. We have used various types of insulation, like rolls of hemp insulation. A big part of the build is the, Internal wall insulation. We have used a rigid wood fibre board on the internal walls, to maintain the original Victorian style at the front of the property and to keep with the rest of the street.

We installed External wall insulation to the rear of the property, with a rigid and flexible wood fibre insulation, fixed to timber I joists, along with a breathable high quality, white render finish .

We have installed new windows and doors throughout the property to passive house standard, along with other innovative building techniques, ensuring that the building has a good thermal envelope.

To make this an energy efficient home, we have also installed an MVHR unit with ducting throughout, the property. This will provide fresh filtered air into the home, whilst retaining most of the energy that has already been used in heating the house.

Solar panels and a solar thermal system, for hot water, installed on the roof, as well as a heat pump installed in the rear garden. This should be one of Liverpools most energy efficient homes for years to come.

Stay tuned for more to come on our South Liverpool project.
